Description

1803/2 BD-3 Half Eagle, AU58
Intermediate Die State

1803/2 $5 BD-3, R.4, AU58 NGC. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State e/b, although the reverse crack that John Dannreuther describes is not evident on this example that has the northeast point of star 9 diminished due to die lapping. The BD-3 and BD-4 half eagles are the most plentiful 1803/2 die marriages although Dannreuther suggests that BD-1 may be slightly more available. A trace of high point wear is evident on each side of this lustrous lemon-yellow example that features trivial handling marks on each side. Most design details are sharp on this well-centered impression although typical weakness is evident on the eagle's claw holding the bundle of arrows near the U in UNITED.
