Description

1803/2 Five Dollar, AU53
BD-4, Good Detail for the Grade

1803/2 $5 BD-4, R.4, AU53 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c. A die crack runs through the base of the date nearly to star 1. A simple identifier for the BD-4 die pair is the complete right foot on the T in LIBERTY. The Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties reference provides a survival estimate of 125 to 175 coins from a possible mintage of 6,000 to 9,000 pieces (33,506 total for the date). This is an appealing coin for the grade with minimal friction on Liberty's portrait. The eagle's feathers exhibit bold detail. Bright yellow-gold color and glints of original luster within the star recesses characterize the surfaces.
