Description

Select 1803/2 Half Eagle, BD-4

1803/2 $5 MS63 PCGS. BD-4, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c. All 1803-dated half eagles are overdates, but BD-4 is readily distinguished from the other three marriages by a perfect T in LIBERTY. The reverse die is identified by its widely repunched T in UNITED. The present early half eagle offers consistent honey-gold color and is refreshingly unabraded. The strike is intricate with incompleteness limited to the forehead curl. Minor adjustment marks, as made, are relegated to the bust tip and the first three digits in the date. Many gold blanks of the era were slightly overweight and required filing on one side by a Mint employee to have the piece conform to standards.
