Description
1804 BD-1 Half Eagle, MS63
One of the Finest of the Variety
Terminal Die State; Reverse Cud
1804 $5 Small 8, BD-1, High R.4, MS63 PCGS. CAC.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. Yellow-gold centers are
complemented with orange-gold on the periphery that is confined to
the letters of LIBERTY and some of the right stars on the obverse
and over UNITED on the reverse. Abrasions are minimal throughout
both sides, and the design is well-impressed throughout, including
on the upper strands of hair and eagle's neck. The year 1804 is responsible for some of the rarest issues in American numismatics, including the famous 1804 dollar and proof eagle, the key date 1804 cent, and the rare 1804 dime and quarter. However, if the collector wants a representative for this date, the half eagle is relatively attainable. The mintage of 30,475 coins is similar to 1800, 1803, and 1805, though less than 1802, and seven die marriages are available to the collector.
The present BD-1 is one of the more available of these varieties, and hails from the Small 8 design type. It is differentiated by the small 4 in the date and more rightward alignment of the E in UNITED over a break in the clouds. The present example comes from the latest of the four die states, with a full cud over the T in UNITED.
The current offering is also one of the finest known examples of the variety. PCGS has only certified two BD-1s in MS63, with one in 63+ and two finer. NGC has certified none equal to or finer than this coin (8/25). This combination of an important year in American numismatics, late die state, and impeccable quality, make this coin an important offering for the early gold specialist.
