Description

1804 Half Eagle, AU50
BD-2, Normal 8, Small 4 Variety

1804 $5 Small 8, BD-2, High R.4, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/d. Often called a Small 8, but it is the correct-size 8 punch according to the BD reference. A boldly detailed coin, but overly bright and without natural patina to mellow the untoned, yellow-gold surfaces. Nice detail remains on Liberty's hair strands and the eagle's plumage above the shield. Struck from a state of the dies where the bisecting cracks on both the obverse and reverse are present but not fully formed. Numerous light abrasions and hairlines are distributed throughout the fields, which retain reflective areas within the legends and around the devices. Old green label holder.
Ex: Cathedral West Collection (Heritage, 6/14), lot 4816.
