1804 $5 Small 8, BD-2, High R.4, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther
Die State d/f. A tiny crack connects the tops of TY in LIBERTY.
This hardy reverse die was used to strike two 1803 varieties and
four 1804 varieties, while this obverse failed relatively quickly.
About 3,000 to 6,000 BD-2 half eagles are believed to have been
struck, of which 70 to 90 coins survive, per John Dannreuther. This
bright yellow-gold example exhibits splashes of reddish color on
each side and a touch of high-point rub over evenly well-stuck
devices.Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 9/2020), lot 3709.
