Description

    1804 Small 8 Five Dollar, BD-2, MS63
    Late Obverse Die State

1804 $5 Small 8 MS63 NGC. Breen-6443, BD-2, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Obverse State b/Reverse State d. The 1, 8, and 4 in the date are all comparatively small, but the 0 is a whopper, and the bisecting die crack that runs through it and all the way through the obverse increases its prominence. Harry Bass Jr. called the 8 "normal" rather than "small." The obverse die crack runs from the dentils beneath the date, through said 0, all the way through the bust, the right side of L, and back to the rim. Numerous die clashes appear on the reverse, which is a carryover from 1803. The reverse shows two die cracks, one from the right shield edge through E(RICA), one from the left shield edge through the upper wing to the rim. Planchet adjustment marks are numerous in the center of the obverse, but none appear on the reverse. This Select piece displays good luster over orange-yellow surfaces with generous rose tints closer to the rims. A super coin to represent the date, and a popular date in U.S. numismatics, to boot. For all Small 8 varieties, Census: 5 in 63, 8 finer (6/11).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# BFXA, PCGS# 8085)

    Weight: 8.75 grams
