Description

Choice AU 1804 Small/Large 8 Half Eagle, BD-7

1804 $5 Small 8 Over Large 8 AU55 PCGS. Breen-6442, BD-7, R.4. This is one of the more interesting varieties among early half eagles. It was created by an inattentive Mint employee (perhaps after his afternoon break for "Gayle"?), who apparently used the digit punches intended for the eagle during preparation of the half eagle die. Then the error was corrected by punching the correctly sized digits on top of his previous blunder. The overpunching is easily visible to the unaided eye. Sharply struck, especially in the centers, the surfaces are uniformly bright yellow-gold, and the fields have a faint glimmer of semi-prooflikeness. Lightly abraded.(Registry values: P3)
