Description
1804 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle, MS63
Small Over Large 8, BD-7
Popular Guide Book Variety
1804 $5 Small Over Large 8, BD-7, R.4, MS63 NGC. CAC.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b, with both sides clashed and light
die cracks on the reverse. According to Mint records, a fairly
substantial mintage of 30,475 Capped Bust Right half eagles was
accomplished in 1804, with seven die varieties known for the date.
This coin represents the BD-7 variety, with the first three digits
in the date dramatically overpunched and the upright of the E in
STATES over a cloud space. The BD-7 is a scarce variety in absolute
terms, but it is still one of the more available issues of this
date, with a surviving population of 100-150 examples in all
grades. The BD-7 dies probably struck 7,500-12,500 pieces of the
reported mintage. This was the third use of the obverse die, which
was also used to produce the BD-5 and BD-6 varieties of this date.
This was the only use of the reverse die.The 1804 Capped Bust Right half eagle was a favorite of early collectors, who began noticing the different varieties as early as lot 1634 of the Fifth Semi-Annual Sale (W. Elliot Woodward, 10/1864), "1804 Very fine, and from a die entirely different from the last, both obverse and reverse; very scarce." The lot realized $11, about the average price for half eagles in that sale. Recent sales include the MS63 PCGS example in lot 3168 of the Summer FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2019), which realized $54,000.
This impressive Select specimen exhibits sharply detailed design elements on the obverse, with dramatic clash marks over the date and in front of the portrait. The reverse shows some loss of detail in selected areas, due to planchet adjustment marks that were not completely struck out. The lightly marked orange-gold surfaces are lustrous and appealing. Census: 10 in 63 (1 in 63★ ), 1 finer. CAC: 4 in 63, 1 finer (9/20).
