Description

1805 BD-1 Half Eagle, MS63
Wonderful Orange-Gold Patina

1805 $5 BD-1, High R.3, MS63 PCGS. Deep orange-gold surfaces contain hints of russet in the protected areas, particularly on the obverse. The faintest hint of striking weakness is present in the central hair detail, over the I in LIBERTY, and where the left wing joins the shield. However, the latter two points of weakness are very minor. The surfaces are abrasion-free, and the only scratch is hidden near the base of the cap, and requires thorough examination to see.

The BD-1 die marriage is easily attributed by the Close Date and the arrowhead that only extends midway through the N. It is the most available of the year at R.3, and the only other die marriage with significant availability is the R.4 BD-2, the other Close Date die marriage. After that is the High R.5 BD-3, and two extremely rare R.7 die marriages, BD-4 and 5, which round out the five varieties for the year.

Few 1805 half eagles of any die marriage are as fine as this example. As is usual for high-grade examples of high-value issues, certification numbers are likely inflated due to resubmissions, but population reports indicate 41 grading events at MS63 and only 21 finer (1/26). Given the choice surfaces of this coin, it should be strongly considered by the half eagle connoisseur and type collector alike.
