Description
Splendid 1805 Half Eagle, BD-3, MS62
1805 $5 MS62 NGC. Wide Date. Breen-6444, BD-3, High R.5. Dannreuther-Bass (2006) list five varieties of the 1805 half eagle. Varieties BD-3, BD-4, and BD-5 have an "imperfect 1" in the date (the left base serif is incomplete) and more widely spaced date digits than on BD-1 and BD-2. BD-3 is distinguished from BD-5 by star 1 positioned farther away from Liberty's hair curl, and from BD-4 by star 9 located closer to the Y of LIBERTY. Dannreuther's study of a reverse rim break above the last S in STATES on 1805 and early 1806 half eagles indicates that "... most of the 1805 coins that employed this reverse were struck in 1806!"This example has tremendous eye appeal, displaying warm honey-gold surfaces tinted with reddish highlights. Some luster remains, and though the center devices have softness typical for the date, there are no detracting abrasions or spots to compromise the overall impression. A few light adjustment marks are well-hidden in Liberty's cap. The present coin is a pleasing and scarce early 19th century half eagle that is sure to appeal to the early gold specialist.
