Description
Marvelous 1805 Half Eagle, BD-3, MS62
1805 $5 MS62 PCGS. Wide Date, Breen-6444, BD-3, High R.5. Bass-Dannreuther die state a/e. The only use of this obverse. The key diagnostics are as follows: the 1 is missing the lower left foot, the tip of the flag of the 5 touches the bust, star 1 is away from the bust, and star 9 is close to the Y in LIBERTY. The Imperfect Date 1805 half eagles (BD-3, 4, and 5) are significantly scarcer than their Perfect Date (BD-1 and 2) counterparts. The present coin is believed to be one of 35 to 45 known, according to an estimate by John Dannreuther (2006).A touch of light orange patina visits the mostly yellow-gold surfaces of this appealing specimen. Light abrasions in the fields do not obscure the stunning semiprooflike reflectivity. The details are boldly defined. This variety is undoubtedly rare at this lofty level. An excellent piece for an early gold specialist.(Registry values: P2)
