Description

1806 Capped Bust Right Five, MS62
Guide Book Knobbed 6 Variety, BD-6

1806 $5 Round Top 6, 7x6 Stars MS62 NGC. BD-6, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/e. The 1806 Capped Bust Right half eagle claims a mintage of 64,093 pieces, with six die varieties known for the date. Five of those varieties feature a Pointed 6 in the date, but this coin represents the single variety with a Knobbed 6, the BD-6. BD-6 is an available issue in the context of early half eagles, with a surviving population of 600-900 pieces in all grades. Mint State specimens are very scarce, however.

The present coin is well-detailed in most areas, with a touch of softness at the juncture of the shield and eagle's wing on the reverse. The brightly lustrous surfaces show only a few small signs of contact, but the left obverse rim exhibits some minor adjustment marks. Visual appeal is quite strong for this popular early half eagle. Census: 62 in 62, 86 finer (4/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# BFXJ, PCGS# 8089)

    Weight: 8.75 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
