Description

    Appealing 1806 Round Top 6
    7x6 Stars Five, BD-6, MS62

1806 $5 Round Top 6, 7x6 Stars MS62 NGC. Breen-6448, BD-6, R.2. Also known as Knobbed 6. BD Obverse/Reverse States d/e. The reverse of this variety is shared with the R.7 BD-5, 1806 Pointed 6 variant. Bass and Dannreuther point out that the Pointed 6 dies were produced first, since the numeral and obverse letter punches were created to replace the Knobbed 6 BD-6. But we can also deduce that the BD-5 was produced first, as the BD-6 reverse shows later die states than the common reverse of the BD-5.
Specifically here, after lapping the dies clashed again, showing clash marks on the reverse in the region of stars 1, 7, 12, and the eagle's beak nearby. More clashing appears above the arrowheads in the field. An obverse rust lump shows on the upright of the R in LIBERTY. A small die crack travels upward from the obverse rim to the lowest hair curls, which are quite thin. Another crack runs from the obverse rim to star 4. This piece offers pretty greenish-gold color and generous, glowing luster, but the piece is struck slightly off-center, missing the reverse denticulation above ED and AM, respectively. There are no adjustment marks visible on either side. An altogether interesting and desirable type coin, with much eye appeal and historic value.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# BFXJ, PCGS# 8089)
