Description
1807 Half Eagle, MS62
Bust Left, BD-8
1807 $5 Bust Left, BD-8, R.2, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther
Die State d/b. The BD-8 die variety is among the most prolific of
the 1807 half eagle varieties with Dannreuther estimating as many
as 500-750 extant. This has led this variety to become the type
piece for the date, but like all varieties the population of Mint
State examples is not enough to satisfy the demand. Light
saffron-gold graces this piece which has some minutely reflective
fields. There are some minor marks in the left obverse field,
though an intermittent gouge runs along Liberty's cheek and stops
at the first lock. The strike is bold and shows no weakness with
impeccable depth in the hair and feathering. While the variety is
the most common of the first-year half eagles, finding a finer Mint
State example will be a conundrum as just 46 have been reported
finer by PCGS in all varieties (4/26).Ex: Online Auction (Great Collections, 6/2020), Item ID 835233.
