    Description

1807 Capped Bust Left Half Eagle, Unc Details
    BD-8 Variety, New Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a

1807 $5 Bust Left -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. BD-8, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a. This obverse die was used to strike the previous variety for the date, BD-7, where it was observed in Die States a and b, the latter showing extensive clash marks. For the BD-8 variety, the Bass-Dannreuther reference lists Die State c, with the clash marks removed by lapping, as the earliest state of the obverse die, but adds:

"...probably the first state, although the previous state of the obverse, State b, may exist with this state of the reverse..."

We believe this coin represents the obverse Die State b, with dramatic clash marks visible in many areas around the bust, combined with reverse Die State a, as John Dannreuther postulated in his statement above. The clash marks are most easily observed between the date and the bust. The surfaces of this sharply detailed example show the unnatural sheen imparted by a previous cleaning, but collectors of early gold die varieties will find this new discovery exciting and worth a serious bid.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 7HS3, PCGS# 8101)
