    Description

1807 Bust Left Half Eagle, MS62
    Rare BD-7 Variety

1807 $5 Bust Left MS62 NGC. BD-7, High R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c, likely terminal for the reverse, with two radial die cracks from the rim near 12 o'clock. As a date, the Bust Left 1807 half eagle is one of the most plentiful early gold issues overall, and is frequently seen at auction and on the bourse. However, nearly all known examples are representative of the plentiful BD-8 die variety; the BD-7 variety, here offered, is a significant rarity, with only 30 to 40 pieces believed known. Both varieties share a common obverse, though the reverse die employed for BD-7 cracked early on and was quickly retired, possibly after as few as 3,000 examples were struck. This is an important Mint State survivor, with luminous green-gold surfaces and boldly struck design elements. Some faint adjustment marks are observed along the lower reverse rim, not uncommon for gold issues of this period, while the die state-consistent clash marks are present in the fields on each side.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 7HS3, PCGS# 8101)
