Description
Exciting 1807 Capped Bust Left Half Eagle, BD-8, MS62
1807 $5 Bust Left MS62 PCGS. Breen-6453, BD-8, R.2. First year of issue, from a mintage of 51,605 pieces. John Reich engraved two varieties of this design in 1807. This is the more available variety, identified by the position of the arrow feather on the reverse. Reich left his secret signature on the design, a notch on the outermost point of star 13. In Collecting & Investing Strategies for United States Gold Coins, Jeff Ambio endorses the 1807 half eagle as a most desirable issue to represent the Capped Bust Left half eagle in a type set. The MS62 grade of the present specimen is in line with Ambio's recommendation for most desirable Mint State grade. The coin offered here is difficult to improve upon. The strike is extraordinary for a coin made with open collar technology. All star centers are strongly delineated, and there is full detail in the hair. Abrasions are minimal for the grade. Smooth, frosty luster complements the sharp strike. A prize for the type collector or early gold specialist.
