Description

1807 Draped Bust Half Eagle, BD-1, AU58
Appealing Final-Year Type Coin

1807 $5 Bust Right, BD-1, R.4, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. BD-1 is one of the more plentiful 1807 half eagle varieties, if only in the context of early gold issues; a survival rate of only 80 to 100 coins is anything but common in the absolute sense. This is the first use of the obverse die, which was later employed for BD-2, and the only use of this reverse, which quickly deteriorates in later die states.

This example is in a very early stage of this die state; the obverse cracks at the ERT in LIBERTY are present, although the corresponding reverse cracks near the IT in UNITED are not yet discernable. The strike is well-executed and even, although faint remnants of mint-made adjustment marks persist along the lower-right obverse border and over the shallow points of Liberty's hair curls. Hints of deeper honey color accent primarily yellow-gold patina.
