Description

1807 Bust Right Half Eagle, BD-4, MS62
An Elusive Die Variety

1807 $5 Bust Right, BD-4, High R.4, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. This is the earliest die state of the BD-4 half eagle. Clash marks and a radial crack from the dentils to the crown of Liberty's cap are from this obverse's previous usage with BD-3. The die is freshly lapped in this usage, although no additional damage is noted. Since this is the final use of John Dannreuther's Obverse 2, it is surmised that sometime after this coin was struck the die failed quickly, even modern collectors have not located a BD-4 coin struck from a terminal die state.

BD-4 is moderately scarce. Dannreuther estimates that 75 to 90 pieces survive in all grades. This Uncirculated coin displays original honey-gold luster and shows only light, scattered abrasions that limit the grade. The border stars are sharp, although the centers are weakly struck, and there are remnants of adjustment marks (mint made) in the same areas.
