1808 $5 AU58 NGC. BD-4, High R.3. Wide 5D. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. The only die state known for this variety. Variety BD-4 is the most easily obtainable variant of the 1808 half eagle, with 175 to 225 examples believed known. This piece exhibits substantial mint luster in the recesses, with just a trace of friction over the high points of the design. No significant abrasions are seen under close examination, while the surfaces display excellent visual appeal. All United States gold coins from this period are highly sought-after, as many were melted in the 1830s due to the rising price of gold.(Registry values: P2)
