Description

1808 BD-3 Half Eagle, MS62
Close 5D, Beautiful Coloration

1808 $5 Close 5D, BD-3, R.4, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/e. Wonderful yellow-gold surfaces mellow to an attractive orange hue in select reverse peripheral regions. Old scratches through from the corner of the headband through the forehead, as well as parallel to the bust, represent the only abrasions of note.
The four die marriages of 1808 half eagles can be divided into two groups: 1808/7 overdates (BD-1 and BD-2) and normal dates (BD-3 and BD-4). The two non-overdated varieties can be differentiated by the distance between 5 D in the denomination, which is close on the present BD-3, but wide on the BD-4. The present BD-3 is slightly scarcer, but both are common in the context of the Early gold series. Finer certifications are scarce. PCGS Population (1808 non-overdate): 42 in 62, 41 finer (5/26).
