1808 Capped Bust Left Five, MS61
    Wide 5 D, BD-4 Variety

1808 $5 MS61 NGC. BD-4, High R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. The 1808 Capped Bust half eagle claims a substantial mintage of 55,578 pieces, with four die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the BD-4 variety, with a widely spaced 5 D in the denomination and a perfect date. Probably 175-225 examples of the BD-4 are extant in all grades and Mint State specimens are very scarce.

This attractive MS61 example exhibits well-detailed design elements, with some slight incompleteness of detail due to lapping. The bright greenish-gold surfaces are lustrous and well-preserved, with no large or distracting flaws. Census: 24 in 61, 57 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PA, PCGS# 8102)
