    Description

1808 Capped Bust Left Five, MS63
    Popular BD-4 Variety

1808 $5 Wide 5D, BD-4, High R.3, MS63 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. A substantial mintage of 55,578 Capped Bust Left half eagles was accomplished in 1808, with four die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the BD-4 variety, with a normal date and a widely spaced 5D in the denomination. BD-4 probably accounted for about 15,000-30,000 pieces of the reported mintage, as it is the most available variety in today's market. The surviving population numbers 175-225 examples in all grades. The obverse die was used previously to coin the 1808 BD-3 variety and the reverse was used again to strike the BD-1 variety of 1809.

The present coin features strongly impressed design elements, but the obverse die was lapped after its previous use, making the details a little thin in places. The vivid orange-gold surfaces are lustrous and lightly marked, with no sign of planchet adjustment marks. Eye appeal is quite strong for this early U.S. gold issue. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 19 in 63, 16 finer (4/15).
