Description

1808 Half Eagle, BD-4, VF20
Attractive Yellow-Gold Surfaces

1808 $5 Wide 5D, BD-4, High R.3, VF20 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/"b," an unlisted late die state with heavy clash marks through STATES. BD-4 shows the denomination 5 D widely spaced, with the A in STATES centered over the U in PLURIBUS. The BD-4 is the most available of the four 1808 varieties (two of them 1808/7 overdates). This example displays just moderate wear and contact marks consistent with the grade on still-attractive yellow-gold surfaces. At the lower end of certified examples, the coin will appeal to collectors who normally find early gold issues to be out of reach.
Ex: Houston Signature (Heritage, 12/2013), lot 4991.
