    1808/7 Half Eagle, BD-2, Rare MS62
    Terminal Die State

1808/7 $5 Close Date, BD-2, High R.4, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c, terminal. The obverse is cracked from star 2, between the ER in LIBERTY, to the rim above the cap; also from the rim, through star 11, and into the hair curls; a third, lighter crack extends downward from Liberty's throat toward the tip of the bust. The Mint State status of this overdate representative is confirmed by the frosty yellow-gold luster in the fields, while trivial chatter on the portrait and the in interior fields is all that limits the grade. Striking softness is seen on the eagle's head and the highest hair curls.

BD-2 is one of two 1808 half eagle varieties that comprise the 1808/7 Guide Book listing. Two different obverse dies were employed for these two issues, although they share a common reverse -- leftover from the BD-8 1807 die marriage. The tail die was further used for the BD-3 1808 die marriage, although this is the only use of this head die. Mint State examples of this overdate are rare, and primarily reside in MS60 or MS61; both varieties included, NGC has seen only six pieces in this grade and three finer (5/15).
