    1808/7 Half Eagle, MS61
    Rare BD-1 Wide Date Variety

1808/7 $5 MS61 NGC. BD-1, R.6. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c with a faint crack from the cap to star 8. The dramatic rim-to-rim obverse crack between 1 and 6 o'clock originates in Die State b/c. The Wide Date BD-1 is the rarest of the four 1808-dated die varieties, and is three to four times scarcer than the Narrow Date BD-2, the other 1808/7 die marriage. The present BD-1 representative is boldly struck and free from any visible abrasions. The olive-gold surfaces display only minor hairlines when evaluated beneath a strong loupe. An opportunity to acquire another unblemished Mint State example may not occur for some time.(Registry values: P3)
