    1808/7 Half Eagle, MS62
    Key BD-1 Variety

1808/7 $5 MS62 PCGS. Wide Date, Breen-6454, BD-1, R.6. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c, with the fatal die crack completely bisecting the obverse. The 1808 half eagle has a reported mintage of 55,578 pieces, with four die varieties known for the date. Two varieties were struck from overdated 1807 dies, including the rare BD-1 die marriage represented by the coin offered here. The BD-1 is identified by the short 1 in the date centered over a dentil. The BD-1 probably accounted for 2,000-3,000 pieces of the reported mintage, with only 20-30 examples surviving today.
This coin is an attractive MS62 example, with sharply detailed design elements and slightly subdued mint luster. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces are accented by hints of rose and green, and show an extensive network of die cracks on the obverse. Population: 5 in 62, 5 finer (11/11).
