    Description

    Important Select 1808/7 Half Eagle

1808/7 $5 MS63 NGC. Close Date. Breen-6455, BD-2, High R.4. The curl is open above the 0 in the date, which is diagnostic for the die marriage. Star 13 has a notched lower outer point, regarded as the secret signature of engraver John Reich, who had introduced the types the prior year. The 1808/7 is scarcer than the normal date 1808, and becomes a major rarity at the MS63 level. This example is sharply struck aside from a hint of softness near the left shield corner. Consequential abrasions are absent, and only a few wispy obverse slide marks limit the grade. Faint adjustment marks are localized to the obverse border between 7 and 10 o'clock, and have no impact upon the eye appeal. Census: 2 in 63, 1 finer (9/06).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25PB, PCGS# 8103)
