Description

1809/8 Five Dollar, AU55
BD-1 Variety

1809/8 $5 BD-1, High R.3, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c. One die marriage exists for the lowest mintage year of this design type, with 33,875 coins struck. Both Harry Bass and John Dannreuther doubted the overdate, it could possibly be just a misplaced 9. The die crack from star 1 to the bust tip places the coin in the latest die state.

Yellow gold with orange highlights on this appealing coin. Light adjustment marks are found on the obverse periphery, and a thin scratch is noted from star 6 to the nose. The strike is sharp. The coin resides in an green label PCGS holder, and the luster is very vibrant for the AU55 grade. Only the lightest wear on the coin's high points. Excellent eye appeal.
