Description

1809/8 BD-1 Five Dollar, MS61
Better Draped Bust Date

1809/8 $5 BD-1, High R.3, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. A charming honey-gold representative that has a mark-free reverse and a lightly abraded obverse. Luster illuminates the borders and devices. The strike is generally good, though the high points of the portrait and eagle show minor blending. BD-1 is the sole 1809-dated die marriage, and it is considerably scarcer than the 1807 BD-8 or 1810 BD-4, the usually encountered Draped Bust Left varieties. The John Reich design can be collected as a six-piece date set, 1807 through 1812, though certain die pairings are out of reach, especially the 1810 BD-3.
