Description

Interesting 1809/8 Half Eagle, BD-1, Mint State Sharpness

1809/8 $5 --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Unc Details. BD-1, High R.3. Only one variety is known for the year and it is debatable whether this "overdate" features a 9 over 8, or a 9 over 9. Bass' doubts were seconded by Dannreuther, who agreed that the underdigit is most likely a misplaced 9. Bright yellow-gold patina embraces both sides of this boldly defined specimen. There are a number of die rust lumps on the bust, but there are no significant abrasions. This piece is Bass-Dannreuther die state b/b, as evidenced by the clash marks on the reverse and the die cracks through several of the obverse stars. A pleasing example despite cleaning. Just 250 to 325 examples are believed to exist. (Registry values: P2)
