    Description

    1809/8 BD-1 Five Dollar, MS62
Only Dies for This Scarce Date

1809/8 $5 MS62 NGC. BD-1, High R.3. The only 1809-dated dies. Traces of recutting near the knob of the 9 are traditionally interpreted as the base of an underdigit 8, though it is possible that the remnants are from a prior impression of an 8 punch. The present green-gold example is boldly struck. The left obverse field and upper reverse field display unimportant contact. Luster dominates the borders and motifs. The strike is virtually full, with inexactness confined to the center of the eagle's neck plumage. The reported mintage is 33,875 pieces, but less than 1% of that figure has survived. The rest were presumably exported as bullion and melted upon overseas arrival.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# BFXK, PCGS# 8104)

This is a most satisfied customer's testimonial of a true gentleman in today's era. It is rare that one encounters through the course of life a person which one has read in childhood' s classics or seen in movies of old.
