    Description

1809/8 Half Eagle, Fully Struck MS63+
    BD-1 Variety

1809/8 $5 MS63+ NGC. BD-1, High R.3. Early half eagles have a reputation for great rarity, but a date collection can be completed (with patience) for the John Reich design from 1807 to 1812. Such a six-piece set would necessarily include the BD-1 1809/8, since it is the only 1809-dated die variety. This butter-gold example displays overlapping sets of clash marks on the reverse field but is only lightly abraded. Cartwheel luster is prominent and the strike is essentially full. Very scarce in all grades, the 1809/8 is rare in Select Mint State. Census: 18 in 63 (1 in 63+), 30 finer (12/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# BFXK, PCGS# 8104)
