    Description

    Select Mint State BD-1
    1809/8 Half Eagle

1809/8 $5 MS63 PCGS. BD-1, High R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. The sole 1809-dated dies. A lovely green-gold early half eagle that displays a bold, even strike and only two remotely mentionable abrasions: a faded pinscratch on Liberty's neck and a distant slender mark near the A in STATES. Moderate adjustment marks (as coined) are limited to the left reverse periphery. Despite the rare reputation of the John Reich half eagle series, a six-piece date collection of the type, 1807 through 1812, is within the reach of most gold collectors. Close to the terminal die state for the variety, but the crack between STATES and OF, mentioned in the Dannreuther reference, is absent on the present coin. Population: 23 in 63, 37 finer (10/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# BFXK, PCGS# 8104)
