Description

1810 Half Eagle, MS61
BD-4, Large Date, Large 5

1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5, BD-4, R.2, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a; the dies are perfect except for a raised area near star 4 caused by an obverse die depression of unknown origin. The 1810 half eagle comes with three different date logotypes and three different logotypes for the 5 in the denomination. Although BD-1 and BD-2 are both considered Small Date varieties, the 0 punch is clearly larger on BD-2 than on BD-1. BD-3 and -4 both share the common Large Date obverse, here represented. Both sides are yellow-gold with pleasantly smooth surfaces. The strike is exacting save for incompleteness on the claws and arrow fletchings. Luster illuminates the devices and legends. A desirable early half eagle that will fulfill a difficult obligation within an advanced gold type set.
