    1810 Large Date Half Eagle, BD-4, MS63
    Lustrous, Sharply Struck Type Coin

1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5, BD-4, R.2, MS63 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, uncracked and unclashed. Most of the 100,287 half eagles struck in 1810 were likely of this variety, as it is relatively plentiful in relation to the three other 1810 die pairings. It is the second and final use of the obverse and the only use of the reverse. Perfect die state examples such as the present are popular for representing the type, particularly when located in attractive Mint State condition. This piece is appealing and sharply struck everywhere except on the eagle's talons, which show minor softness. Bright yellow-gold mint luster shows only a few light abrasions. Finer pieces are rare and highly sought-after.
