Description
1810 BD-4 Half Eagle, MS63
Large Date, Large 5
CAC Approved PCGS Rattler Holder
1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5, BD-4, R.2, MS63 PCGS. CAC.
HBJ-246. Housed in a PCGS generation 1.2 rattler holder.
This impressive 1810 Large Date, Large 5 half eagle presents
outstanding eye appeal, displaying brilliant yellow-gold luster.
Central weakness below Liberty's ear and left of the shield are
typical of the design. Light horizontal adjustment marks are noted
along the left reverse border and across the vertical shield
stripes.Variety Equivalents: Adams-1, Breen 1-A, Miller-109, Bass-3117.
Obverse Die: The Large Date obverse is found on BD-3 and BD-4.
Reverse Die: The reverse die is unique to this die marriage.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b: The clashed obverse has a die crack from the lowest curl into the field between the 8 and 1 in the date. Trivial rust lumps are noted in the low curl. The reverse shows light clash marks.
PCGS Population Data (10/25): The PCGS Large Date, Large 5 half eagle population includes 52 that are graded MS63, two graded MS63+, and 43 finer submissions.
CAC Census (10/25): CAC data records 14 examples of the 1810 Large Date, Large 5 half eagle in MS63 and eight graded MS64 with none finer.
Significant Examples: The 1810 BD-4 Large Date, Large 5 half eagles are available in grades from XF40 to MS64. PCGS and NGC have assigned numerical grades to 596 submissions of this variety with an average grade of AU58. Just 17 examples grade less than XF40 and only 10 submissions grade finer than MS64.
Breen (1966): Regarding the various 1810 varieties, Breen observed: "Notable for large and small dates muled with large and small 5. At one time there was not thought to be any particular difference in rarity among them. More recent research has shown that over 80% of the specimens of this date are from the dies here called 1-A."
Bass-Dannreuther (2006): "This is one of the most seen of all the early gold coins from 1795 to 1834 Motto. The high end of the Estimated mintage is 90,000 coins. Incredibly, the dies remained in great shape with nearly every example examined either in the perfect state or clashed (b/b)."
Heritage Commentary: The 1807 BD-8 and 1810 BD-4 half eagle varieties have an estimated population of 500 to 750 coins according to Dannreuther. Either variety is sufficient for the collector seeking an example of the design. One of each will suffice for the date collector who seeks to complete the six-coin set from 1807 to 1812. Beyond that, the 1810 BD-4 is a necessary component in a variety set of this coinage-date. Only a few collectors have completed that set including Harry W. Bass, Jr. and Harvey B. Jacobson, Jr.
Doug Winter Commentary: Just a really solid coin for the grade with great luster and blazing frosty luster. If you need a choice MS example of this type, buy this one...its nice!
