    Description

1810 Large Date, Large Five Half Eagle
    BD-4, A Superlative Near-Gem

1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5 MS64 NGC. CAC. Breen-6459, BD-4, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The Large Date/Large 5 combination is by far the most plentiful of the four varieties known for the year, making it good bait for type coin collectors. Its Guide Book listing (all four are listed) makes it even more in demand. The obverse of this near-Gem displays semiprooflike fields, and both sides offer remarkably deep reddish coloration. The obverse is fully struck, the reverse less so, and there are a few scattered marks that account for the grade, especially in the right obverse field. A superlative example with no adjustment marks or mentionable distractions, struck from an early state of the dies.(Registry values: P2)
