Description

Frosty Near-Gem 1810 Large Date, Large 5
Half Eagle, BD-4

1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5 MS64 PCGS. Large Date, Large 5, Breen-6459, BD-4, R.2. The date is large, with a near-horizontal flag atop the first 1 in the date. The reverse shows a large, squat 5 with the top right portion of its flag pointing directly at the lowest feather tip on the fletchings.
The obverse of this die combination is shared with the extremely rare 1810 Large Date, Small 5 variant, BD-3, estimated at High R.7 or four to six pieces known according to Bass-Dannreuther. But with the Large 5 reverse, this 1801 variety is among the most available of this difficult U.S. coin series, along with the 1806 Knobbed 6 (BD-6), the 1807 BD-8, and the 1813 BD-1. Bass-Dannreuther notes that this variety is the most frequently seen early half eagle in MS64 (the grade of the present piece) or finer condition. That reference notes that the estimated upper range for the mintage is some 90,000 pieces, and that the dies "remained in great shape with nearly every example examined either in the perfect state or clashed."
The piece appears to be a fresh strike from new dies, as there is no visible clashing on either side, and considerable frosty luster emanates from each side of this orange-gold near-Gem. A few light adjustment marks appear on Liberty's cheek, so faint that they are scarcely visible without magnification. The strike is sharp if a trifle short of full, and neither side reveals anything more than the most minute, scattered signs of contact. This piece would make a wonderful type coin for the collector who desires a nice near-Gem piece without seeking one of the rarer varieties that so abound in the series.
