Description

Near-Gem 1810 Half Eagle
Large Date, Large 5, BD-4

1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6459, BD-4, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, perfect dies. A lovely olive-gold near-Gem of this popular Guide Book variety. The strike is precise save for slight merging of the plumage near the left shield border, and the fields are smooth save for wispy luster grazes. Specialists argue that the Large 5 is a misnomer, since it is shorter than the Tall 5. In his notes, Harry W. Bass, Jr. referred to it as a Fat 5. Regardless of nomenclature, this variety is subject to strong demand from gold type collectors, who soon learn that the pre-1834 designs were heavily melted and are even more elusive than their mintages suggest. Population: 34 in 64, 2 finer (4/09).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 8108, GSID# 8814)

Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
