1810 $5 Large Date, Small 5, BD-3, High R.7, VF25 PCGS....
Description
1810 BD-3 Half Eagle, VF25
Large Date, Small 5
Akers Plate Coin
1810 $5 Large Date, Small 5, BD-3, High R.7, VF25 PCGS.
HBJ-244. Ex: D. Brent Pogue Collection. Light yellow gold
surfaces show inconsequential handling marks on both sides of this
eye-appealing example that served as the plate coin for David
Akers' 1979 auction analysis of half eagles.Variety Equivalents: Adams unlisted, Breen 1-B, Miller-110, Bass-3118.
Obverse Die: The Large Date obverse is found on BD-3 and BD-4.
Reverse Die: The reverse is shared between 1810 BD-2 and BD-3.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c: This example appears to be an earlier stage of reverse state c with a faint crack from the scroll over the P to the field over the left wing. A crack from the edge runs upward beside the lowest leaf to the left-most claw.
PCGS Population Data (10/25): Two of the three PCGS certified examples of this rarity are offered in the present sale. The third is certified AU53.
Significant Examples: This is the second finest of four examples known to us.
Breen (1966): Breen recorded two auction appearances: Geiss 1676 and lot 4173 of the Miami-F.U.N. sale. B. Max Mehl described the Geiss coin in 1947 as: "1810 Large date with small 5 D. Uncirculated; highest portions show slight cabinet friction. With some semi-proof surface. Very scarce so choice." The coin was not plated in the catalog, so Breen relied solely on Mehl's description that may or may not be accurate.
Bass-Dannreuther (2006): "This is the rarity of this type! Estimates by most researchers have all been no more than a half dozen coins. This number might be generous as the author can only trace four or five examples."
Heritage Commentary: The lack of illustrations in older catalogs, the use of stock photos in many instances, and frequent mis-attributions are reasons that older provenance chains are often difficult if not impossible to reconstruct today. Firms that were active during the World War II years from 1940 to 1945 faced restrictions on paper use that contributed to the smaller, unillustrated catalogs of that era.
Doug Winter Commentary: No, it's no beauty but any coin as rare as this still deserves your attention. The fact that this coin was good for Brent Pogue really says something about the rarity of the 1810 Large Date, Small 5 half eagle.
Provenance: Recorded below.

Additional Appearances:
A. Belden Roach Collection (B. Max Mehl, 2/1944), lot 532. Described as "1810 Large date with small 5 on reverse. About fine. Extremely rare variety. Not listed in Standard Catalog." This is likely a proper attribution but with no photo, its specific identity is impossible to ascertain.
B. Dr. Charles W. Green Collection (B. Max Mehl, 4/1949), lot 249. Described as "1810 Small date. Reverse, large 5. Nearly uncirculated; sharp impression. Frosty mint surface." This appearance was not illustrated with no other provenance information.
C. Farish Baldenhofer Collection (Stack's, 11/1955), lot 1226. Described as "1810 Large date, small 5 D. Strictly Fine." Not illustrated and the brief description provides no help determining which example this matches.
D. Brand and Lichtenfels Collection (Abner Kreisberg and Hans M.F. Schulman, 3/1964), lot 2384. Not illustrated and described as "1810 Large Date, Small 5. Fine to Very Fine." Like the Baldenhofer example, this brief catalog description provides no further information to determine the provenance.
E. Pre-Long Beach Sale (Superior, 2/2000), lot 1082. This lot was described as: "The Key Variety of 1810 Half Eagle." However, the illustration is an example of BD-2, including the terminal obverse die crack.
