Extremely Rare Large Date, Small 5
    1810 Half Eagle, BD-3

1810 $5 Large Date, Small 5 -- Smoothed Fields -- Net Grade VF30 PCGS. Breen-6460, BD-3, High R.7. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. The Bass-Dannreuther reference describes BD-3 as "the rarity of this type! Estimates by most researchers have all been no more than a half dozen coins. This number might be generous, as the author can trace only four or five examples. Harry Bass owned two of them!" The 1810 Large Date, Small 5 receives separate Guide Book listing at an enormous premium relative to the more plentiful Large Date, Large 5 (BD-4) and Small Date, Tall 5 (BD-1).
BD-3 pairs the Large Date obverse of the "common" BD-4 with the Small 5 reverse of the rare BD-2. Small 5 is something of a misnomer, and Narrow 5 might be a more accurate description of the denomination numeral. The present coin displays considerable luster and if problem-free would certainly grade AU. The fields are a bit bright, particularly just beneath the scroll, although no smoothing is obvious when inspected beneath a loupe. This well defined example has pale honey-gold color and lacks noticeable abrasions. One small strike-through (as made) is beneath the eagle's neck.
We are only able to trace auction appearances (dating back to 1976) of four different examples. They are:
    1) C.W. Krugjohann Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 5/1976), lot 1326; Fairfield Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1977), lot 1758; Harry W. Bass, Jr.; ANA Museum.
    2) AU55 "cleaned and buffed-up." Pre-Long Beach Sale (Superior, 2/2000), lot 1082.
    3) Net VF30. Auction '80 (Paramount, 8/1980), part of lot 923; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Part II (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 794. The present coin.
    4) Very Fine. Akers plate coin; Americana Sale (Stack's, 1/2006), lot 3020.
