Description

1810 Small Date, Large 5 Half Eagle, MS62
Breen-6462, BD-1

1810 $5 Small Date, Large 5 MS62 NGC. Breen-6462, BD-1, High R.3. This variety is attributed by the first 1 in the date almost centered over a dentil (minutely just left of center), the top of the 1 a bit higher than the 8, star 12 repunched, a faint crack through stars 3 to 6, and the feather tip well past the flag of the large 5. John Dannreuther and Harry Bass (2006) note that this variety is "much less often seen than the Large Date, Large 5 variety of this date, BD-4."
Bright yellow-gold surfaces on this MS62 example display the most potent luster in the interstices of, and the areas around, the design elements. A well impressed strike brings out sharp definition on the motifs, and most of the dentilation is quite bold. Some faint adjustment marks are located at the rim of the upper left reverse quadrant, and a handful of minute contact marks are scattered over each side.
