Extremely Rare 1810 Small Date, Small 5 Half Eagle

1810 $5 Small Date, Small 5 XF45 PCGS. Ex: Bass. B. 2-B, R.7. Formerly sold as lot 795 in Bass II, where it was described as, "In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen suggested that fewer than eight examples of this major variety are known, none Mint State. A very pleasing example with natural greenish gold surfaces, displaying typical lightly abraded surfaces, as expected for the grade. The reverse rim is slightly weak above STAT. A small dark spot just left of the forecurl is an important pedigree characteristic. This is the first example of this variety we have ever offered, another testimonial to the depth and breadth of the present Bass Collection presentation." The price realized for this extreme rarity in the Capped Bust Left Half Eagle series when sold in October, 1999 was an impressive $29,900. Population: 2 in 45, 3 finer (11/01). (NGC ID# 42HK, PCGS# 8105)

    Weight: 8.75 grams
