Description

1810 Small Date, Tall 5 Half Eagle, MS64
Lustrous, Richly Frosted BD-1 Example

1810 $5 Small Date, Tall 5, BD-1, High R.3, MS64 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c. Collectors and numismatists who specialize in early U.S. gold have come to appreciate the numerous varieties that exist for the 1810 Capped Bust fives. Four die pairs include various combinations of Small and Large dates, variously paired with reverses that feature Small, Large, and Tall 5s in the denomination.
This frosty BD-1 near-Gem Uncirculated example displays rich orange-gold color and highly lustrous, smooth surfaces. Marks are minimal on either side. A thin, faint hair-thin line runs under Liberty's eye to her cap and a small copper alloy spot nestles between the outer points of star 6. Planchet adjustment marks are confined to the reverse rim and barely creep into the margins except for a few that are scarcely visible where they angle across the horizontal shield stripes. A pair of tiny die lumps near Liberty's chin are diagnostic of this coin's late die state.
The Tall 5 variety's visually more slender than the more robust Large 5 variant, which displays wider curved base of 5. The Tall 5 can be recognized by the three shortened dentils beneath the digit. On this BD-1 variety, the Tall 5 punch actually strikes the dentils, as John Dannreuther points out. The reverse die reappears in 1811 despite its scattered cracks and die lumps that characterize the late die state. This Choice 1810 five dollar gold is a beautiful example of an interesting and scarce variety -- ideal for a well-formed set of Capped Bust gold. NGC Census: 3 in 64, none finer (3/26).
