    1811 Half Eagle, Still-Lustrous AU50
    Small 5, BD-2

1811 $5 Small 5, BD-2, R.3, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/a, without any prominent cracks or clash marks. A total of 98,851 five dollar gold pieces were reportedly coined in 1811. The Bass-Dannreuther reference estimates 35,000 to 50,000 of those represent this Small 5 variety. Possibly 225 to 300 pieces are believed extant, and they appear at auction with enough frequency to make them a target of type collectors. This well-detailed and still-lustrous half eagle displays light yellow-gold color over surfaces that show a number of small abrasions. Attractive and problem-free.
