Description
Mint State 1811 Small 5 Half Eagle, BD-2
1811 $5 Small 5 MS61 NGC. Breen-6464, BD-2, R.3. The 1811 Small 5 half eagle shares a mintage of 98,851 pieces with the other variety of this date, the Tall 5. The Small 5 is slightly more common and ranks as one of the most available Capped Bust Left half eagles. In Collecting & Investing Strategies for United States Gold Coins, Jeff Ambio recommends this date for inclusion in a complete type set. The characteristic Small 5 numeral punch was previously used on two rare half eagle varieties in 1810 (BD-2, BD-3) and continued to be used in 1812 (BD-1, BD-2).This Mint State coin will attract the attention of type collectors and early half eagle specialists alike. The coin appears high-end for the assigned grade, with only light field chatter visible on both sides but no singularly mentionable abrasions. Tiny adjustment marks are noted at the obverse rim above stars 6 and 7, scarcely visible without a glass.(Registry values: P2)
