Description

Attractive 1811 Small 5 Half Eagle, BD-2, MS61

1811 $5 Small 5 MS61 NGC. Breen-6464, BD-2, R.3. Two varieties for the year (Tall 5 and Small 5 reverses) share an obverse die; the small 5 with the feather tip over the center of the flag of the 5 in the closely spaced denomination is diagnostic for this reverse. Attributed as "Obverse State e" from the John Dannreuther and Harry Bass Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties reference, showing obverse reclashing and die crack from star 9 to star 10, and "Reverse State b, clashed."
The brass-gold surfaces display soft luster and are imbued with traces of greenish-tan. A well executed strike imparts sharp detail to the design elements. Light handling marks do not detract, nor do faint adjustment marks on the upper reverse. This is quite an attractive coin for the designated grade.
