    Description

    1811 BD-2 Half Eagle, MS61
    Small 5

1811 $5 Small 5 MS61 PCGS. BD-2, R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d, and this combination of die states is not specifically recorded in the Bass-Dannreuther reference. The obverse die is clashed with a faint die crack connecting stars 9 and 10. The reverse has been lapped with no evidence of the earlier die cracks and rust lumps.

Both varieties have the 5 in 5 D. leaning sharply to the right. The Small 5 has the bottom of that digit well away from the border, while the Large 5 has the bottom of that digit nearly touching the border. This lovely Mint State piece has brilliant lemon-yellow luster with minimal handling marks and exceptional design definition.(Registry values: P2)
